What is a cluster?
A cluster is a geographically proximate group of interconnected companies and associated institutions in a particular field, linked by commonalities and complementarities” (Michael E. Porter)
Hence, a cluster is an economic reality of an area. There are quite many clusters around the world and especially in Catalonia.
From economic reality to cluster organization
From the above definition, in Catalonia we ‘ve been working since the 90’s with these economic realities in order to implement measures to improve the competitiveness of companies in clusters.
In this case where the number of companies is significant, the actuations have had incidence and companies have decided to lead the projects , clusters have been structured. Clusters are currently understood as organizations that work for improving companies’ competitiveness.
Clusters understood as organizations tend to be associations in their legal form and are joined by a number of companies and institutions that share the same business sector.
Cluster organizations are always led by companies, even having a close collaboration with different administrations and institutions.
It is important to emphasize the essential role developed , since the 90s and still ongoing by the Government of Catalonia (currently through ACCIÓ – the competitiveness agency).
The principal goal shared by all cluster organizations is to improve companies’ competitiveness through projects where business strategy, innovation and internationalisation play a primary role.
